Estrogen’s Phase 3 Exit Plan From the Bile through the Microbiome

“Estrogen cannot (and should not) float around the body indefinitely. As a result, a well-designed system of elimination is in place to help neutralize and escort estrogen out. While the process is described in a phase 1- 2- 3 order, it should be first addressed with the end in mind, at phase 3. This lecture will review the stages of estrogen metabolism that begins with the cellular efflux transporters moving estrogen out of the cell, into the bile, and down into the intestines. Treatment optimization methods will be discussed as seen in the literature for each step, including a brief review of hydroxylation, methylation, sulfation, and glucuronidation of estrogen metabolites.”
