Brice Thompson ND, MS - Autoimmunity and Microbial Metabolites(postbiotics) - (1 General CE Credit)
2022 Thaena Microbiome Symposium - The Rise of Postbiotics: The Roles they Play in in immunology and women's health.
DESCRIPTION
Discuss the importance the microbiome plays in the pathophysiology of autoimmunity as well as provide details on the primary metabolites(postbiotics) that are associated with autoimmune conditions. Discuss microbial metabolites that may protect ‘at-risk’ individuals and discuss the mechanisms of nutritional interventions and how they interact with the microbiome.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
- Define the three primary mechanisms that microbiota may play a role in the development of autoimmunity.
- List the primary microbial metabolites that may lead to the development of specific autoimmune conditions.
- List the primary microbial metabolites that may be protective against the development of autoimmune conditions in “at-risk” animal models simulating genetic risk.
- Discuss how the mechanisms behind the beneficial effects of various nutritional interventions commonly used in autoimmune treatment protocols may be (at least partially) microbiome-mediated.
INSTRUCTOR
Brice is a Naturopathic Doctor and Researcher who loves drugs, herbs, immunology, and microbiology. He’s been involved in a wide range of research projects covering topics from tuberculosis, to obesity, to microbiome metabolomics. He’s also contributed to textbooks related to both natural medicine and pharmaceutics.
After graduating from the National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM) in 2018, he pursued additional research training at the University of Washington by completing a postdoctoral research fellowship in the Department of Pharmaceutics. He is currently the Chief Scientific Officer for Thaena, where he helps coordinate research related to postbiotics. He also holds an adjunct faculty position at NUNM, where he lectures on immunology and pharmacology for the School of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies, College of Classical Chinese Medicine, and College of Naturopathic Medicine.
