Erik Lundquist MD - Immunity, Sleep and the Microbiome (1 General CE Credit)

2022 Thaena Microbiome Symposium - The Rise of Postbiotics: The Roles they Play in in immunology and women's health.

DESCRIPTION

Sleep has long been known to have a relationship with the immune system. When we get an infection, we want to crawl into bed and hibernate. Likewise, when we aren’t getting enough sleep, we are prone to getting infections. However, recently links between sleep and the microbiome have been revealed. Furthermore, some of the ways that the microbiome effects sleep involve the immune system and inflammation. In this seminar, we will explore how sleep and the immune system are related and how the microbiome can modify this relationship.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  1. Provide details on how sleep the immune system interact.
  2. Discuss the sequelae of enough sleep and not enough sleep.
  3. Share how sleep and the microbiome interact.
  4. Discuss further how the microbiome can impact sleep and inflammation.

Dr. Lundquist has a special interest in Integrative, Functional and Holistic Family Medicine. He is currently the founder for the Temecula Center for Integrative Medicine (where he works 2 days a week) and the medical director for Personalized Lifestyle Medicine Center (a joint venture with Metagenics). He is a member of multiple integrative and functional medicine organizations as well as The International Society of Environmentally Acquired Illnesses (ISEAI) and The International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS). He specializes in endocrine disorders such as thyroid and adrenal dysfunction, sex hormone imbalances and cardiometabolic disorders (such as diabetes) as well as treatments for chronic fatigue/fibromyalgia, migraine headaches, and autoimmune disorders. He has expanded his scope over the past several years to become an expert in treating biotoxin illnesses, such as those related to Mold toxicity, Chronic Lyme Disease and Breast Implant Illness.

One exciting aspect of his practice is the many drug free and non-surgical treatments for chronic pain that he has incorporated utilizing Regenerative Therapies such as Ozone injections, Clot Master-a form of platelet rich plasma (PRP), and Wharton’s Jelly (an amniotic fluid) treatment. These methods have proven very helpful in restoring function and relieving pain for multiple musculoskeletal conditions.

Dr. Lundquist has a passion for getting to the root cause of disease and disorders and for teaching and sharing his knowledge and experience. He has had the opportunity to speak at many different Integrative and Functional medicine conferences as well as to the Integrative Medicine Fellowship sponsored by AIHM. He recently completed a chapter entitled “Thyroid and Adrenal Influences on the Cardiovascular System” for Personalized and Precision Integrative Cardiovascular Medicine, a textbook edited by Dr Mark Houston.

He attended Occidental College in LA where he graduated with a B.A. in Kinesiology and Biology. He received his MD from St. Louis University School of Medicine and completed his family medicine residency at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton where he served as chief resident.  Dr. Lundquist spent 8 years on active duty with the Navy serving in Iraq as a battalion surgeon with the Marine Corps as well as serving for 3 years at a Naval Hospital in Naples, Italy.

Dr. Lundquist is Board Certified in Family Medicine with ABFM and he is sub-specialized with the American Board of Integrative Medicine (ABoIM).   He also has received a certification from the American Board of Integrative and Holistic Medicine (ABIHM) and the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM).

He is married with three children and loves inspiring his patients to take control of their health and combat "dis-ease". He enjoys teaching his peers about integrative and functional medicine approaches to chronic diseases.
