Julie Greenberg, ND, RH(AHG), MBA - Addressing the Root Cause of Psoriasis: the Gut Microbiome (1 General CE Credit)
2023 Thaena Microbiome Symposium - The Rise of Oxidative Stress + Chronic Inflammation: An Ecosystem Approach.
DESCRIPTION
Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease which affects over 125 million people worldwide. Psoriasis is much more than just a skin disease: it is a systemic inflammatory disease that puts people at increased risk for several comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, depression, cancer, and increased mortality. While the pathophysiology of psoriasis is complicated, it is well understood that an overactive Th17 cell response lies at the heart of the disease. Most conventional psoriasis medications focus on immune system suppression. But there is abundant evidence that a large part of the underlying root cause of psoriasis stems from gut microbiome dysfunction which drives an elevated systemic immune response. This presentation will present the latest published research on the gut-skin connection in psoriasis, as well as training on how to use functional medicine tests like stool tests and organic acid tests (OATs) to treat the root cause of psoriasis. Evidence-based research on which botanicals and supplements have clinically proven results for treating psoriasis will also be reviewed. Case studies with before and after photos will be presented showing how addressing the gut microbiome can lead to clearance of all types of psoriasis. This session will provide attendees with the tools they need to run these functional medicine labs and treat even the toughest psoriasis cases.
