Patrick Hanaway MD - The GUT Microbiome as AntiOxidant (1 General CE Credit)

2023 Thaena Microbiome Symposium - The Rise of Oxidative Stress + Chronic Inflammation: An Ecosystem Approach.

DESCRIPTION

This lecture explores the symbiotic relationship between the gut microbiome and oxidative stress, focusing on their roles in health and disease. It covers the impact of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) on the gut microbiota, the activation of redox enzymes, and the modulation of oxidative stress by microbial metabolites. The lecture also examines the connection between oxidative stress, gut-derived metabolites, and aging/healthspan, culminating in insights into nutrients and supplements that mitigate oxidative stress within the gastrointestinal tract.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  1. Describe the role(s) of the gut microbiome and oxidative stress in health and disease.
  2. The presence of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) affects the gut microbiome. Describe how the gut microbiome affects oxidative stress through activation of redox enzymes.
  3. Microbial metabolites directly affect oxidative stress. Define the specific metabolites that decrease (and/or increase) oxidative stress in the gut.
  4. Demonstrate the inter-relationship between oxidative stress, gut-derived metabolites, and aging/ healthspan.
  5. Determine which nutrients and nutritional supplements will decrease oxidative stress within the gastrointestinal tract.

INSTRUCTOR

PATRICK HANAWAY, MD is a board-certified family physician trained at Washington University. For more than 20 years he worked with his wife, Dr. Lisa Lichtig, in clinical practice @ Family to Family: Your Home for Whole Health Care in Asheville, NC. Patrick's work history includes being Chief Medical Officer at Genova Diagnostics, Chief Medical Education Officer for IFM and the founding Medical Director of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine. He has published extensively on functional medicine, as well as teaching clinicians around the world. His current work integrates research, education and patient care; focusing on nutrition, the microbiome, and evaluating the value of functional medicine.
